MRSA case on Long Island leads to wrestling precautions

A wrestler at a school on Long Island has contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a communicable bacterium that often causes difficult-to-treat infections, even in healthy people.

Newsday reported that Hauppauge wrestler Nick Mauriello, Jr. is in intensive care at Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital due to an MRSA infection that he contracted late last month. As a precaution against additional MRSA spread, all sectional state qualifying tournaments this weekend will have their mats cleaned after each and every round, as will the mats at the state tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany.
